यहां दुश्मनों के आक्रमण से बचने के लिए रक्षा चौकियां और तोपों के झरोखे तैयार किए गए हैं, जिनके चार अलग-अलग कोनों पर द्वार है। इस महल का खिजड़ी नामक द्वार इकलौता ऐसा मार्ग था, जो सीधे नदी की तरफ खुलता था। इसके साथ ही ग्वालियर गेट और दिल्ली गेट भी बहुत प्रख्यात लाल किले का हिस्सा है।

शाब्दिक रूप से ‘कांच का महल’ अर्थात् दीवारों पर छोटे दर्पण की सजावट है अर्थात् यह शाही छोटे जड़ाऊ दर्पणों से सुसज्जित राजसी वस्त्र बदलने का कमरा था ।

स्मारक स्वरूप दिल्ली गेट, सम्राट का औपचारिक द्वार था, जिसे भारतीय सेना द्वारा (पैराशूट ब्रिगेड) हेतु किले के उत्तरी भाग के लिये छावनी रूप में प्रयोग किया जा रहा है। अतः दिल्ली द्वार जन साधारण हेतु खुला नहीं है। पर्यटक लाहौर द्वार से प्रवेश ले सकते हैं, जिसे कि लाहौर की ओर (अब पाकिस्तान में) मुख होने के कारण ऐसा नाम दिया गया है।
